Why choosing the right camera is important!
October 10. 2015
Choosing the right one can be quite stressful. It is important to do your research to ensure that you choose the right camera to satisfy your needs.
Choosing the right camera used to be an easy task. That is because a few years back there was a limited amount of cameras on the market. With the evolution of technology over the past few years, the number of cameras that are for sale on the market today has increased greatly. There are disposable cameras, digital cameras, cell/mobile phone cameras, camcorders, and the list goes on. All cameras generally serve the same purpose and that is to capture a moment in time. Although they serve the same purpose, different cameras are designed for different uses. It is important to choose the right camera for the right purpose. Let's take a look at the difference between a camcorder, a DSLR camera, and a Digital Cine Camera.
Consumer camcorders for the most part are great for hobbyist and documentations. These are great for recording sports events, days in the park, business meetings, spot on documentaries, or small live events. Camcorders are good to record family events and vacations as well. Camcorders used to be really popular before the evolution of mobile phone camcorders. Before mobile phones came equipped with cameras it seemed like every family had a camcorder. Camcorders come in different shapes and sizes. From the generic small rectangle ones like we saw around ten years ago, to the ones built now (Describe how technology has changed how they look now). The price range on new camcorders from the most basic one ranges from $120.00 to an advanced one $3,000.00
Digital SLR's knows as DSLR'S are typically used for photography but can be used for video recording as well. DSLR's are a bit more complex to use than a camcorder. To use a DSLR you must have a basic understanding of ISO, SHUTTER SPEED, and APERTURE known as DOF (Depth of field). These principles are extremely important to producing a quality video. DSLR's are good for short films and commercials. These cameras need different lenses for different scenarios. Click here to see different examples of lenses. These types of cameras are great for filming on a scene to scene scenario since their approximate recording time is fifteen minutes. The price range for DSLR cameras range anywhere from $300.00 to $8,000.00
Digital Cine Cameras are high end cameras and should only be used for serious productions such as movies or other productions that are intended for high quality use. Cine cameras are best for documentaries, short films and feature films. They can be used for literally anything that requires high quality for the end result. The drawbacks are that they are usually heavy and bulky. They require at least thirty minutes of setup time and you need a lot of extra batteries in a remote location because the battery consumption is high. Cine cameras are the most complex to use but with the right experience and preparation the final result is miraculous compared to other cameras. These cameras get very expensive because they need cine lenses for maximum potential. The optics inside these lenses are what make them so expensive. The price range for Cine cameras (just the body) can go from $1,000.00 starting to $128,000.00. Thats not including the lenses.
